I keep seeing these gorgeous tiered tassel earrings everywhere so I decided I needed to learn how to make tassel earrings. Since I make all sorts of other types of jewelry, I figured why not?
I decided to go with some light purple and pink cotton embroidery thread, golden metallic thread and .925 silver hooks.
Some people like to really make their tassels plump, but I just went with cutting these bundles in half.
I did this until I had enough to make six tassels.
Since I am a total newbie at these, let me save you some grief. Don’t add the jump ring to all of the tassels you plan to use in your tiered tassel earrings. I really don’t know what I was thinking and I had to take all of the rings off except the top tassels. You only need a jump ring for tassels that connect to hooks.
I tied the gold metallic thread around the top of the tassel a good amount and knotted it twice then cut off the excess. It is a good idea to add a little bit of clear fabric glue on the knot to keep it secure.
Cut off the excess of your tassel at the desired length. Be sure to use really sharp scissors. Mine was not all that sharp.
Now it’s time to start connecting them together. I used an embroidery needle and threaded on some of the gold metallic thread. I tied about 4 solid knots at the end of the thread.
Spread out the bottom of the tassel and insert the needle through the bottom and straight up the top of the tassel. After I did this step, I realized I needed to take off my jump ring since this is the bottom of the three tiers. The only part of the earrings that need a jump ring is the top tassel which connects to the ear hooks.
Your thread should be popping out the top middle like this. Slowly pull the knot you made at the end up until it is snug. Straighten as needed. You will just have to work with it to get all the threads in place and keep them from bunching up.
Continue adding the tiers by the same method.
Adding the Tiers
After adding the top tiered tassel, simply tie a knot in your thread and carefully pull it snug. Clip off the excess thread. Add the ear hooks.
That’s how you make tassel earrings. The kind that are tiered. It was not difficult at all. I just need lots more practice if I am going to start making them. The total cost to make these were probably $5.00. They are so cheap and easy to make.
